but logic can get smaller and smaller and if Intel does not have new products to make in expanding volume to offset die size reductions and the 300MM Si discs they will soon end up overfabbed.

Sure, you're right but Intel is gambling that they will have new products that will use those fabs. AMD gambles their life every day, what's so strange about Intel taking a gamble to expand beyond PCs? Intel will not grow substantially on PCs alone. That's over. It's highend servers and comms. That or stagnation.
