We differ, then.

I love to speculate on characters' lives beyond the book or movie. Both parts of their lives during the events being discussed which aren't included in the book or movie, and their lives afterwards. To me, a good book is one which introduces me to characters who become as close as possible to real people, characters I can relate to, can imagine sitting around the dinner table with, with lives that are complex and interesting, even if not always pleasant. I love thinking about what Jane Austen might have written if she had done a sequel to, for example, P&P; what was Elizabeth and Darcy's married life like, how did they live, what were their children like.

If I can put a book down and not care any more about any of the characters, to me that's not a very interesting book.
