the gene pool cannot help but be corrupted by the survival of those less fit. ... expect humans to become more sickly in general.
This statement shows no understanding of Natural Selection and the modern explanations of evolution. The survival of "less fit" means that more gene types survive (for the moment) and that these genes have more of a chance to combine (through sexual pairings) with genes that can compensate for the effects. Eventually a time will come when genes are more tightly selected than now and the more fit versus less fit competition will unfold. It will be the totality of gene combinations that determines survival (along with a bit of luck). Currently human evolution is in the equilibrium phase, but if the population continues to rise then a punctuation phase can be expected. If humans emerge changed at all, they will most likely be even better adapted having incorporated some new genes combinations.
