The Constiution specifically bans ex post facto laws and bills of attainder.

Since slavery was not illegal until after the civil war, no one who had a slave prior to that time can be charged with the crime of owning a slave. So no one violated the law by owning one.

A bill of attainder is a law that makes actions of an ancestor your crime. Such bills are unconstitutional. That means the crimes of the fathers cannot be held against the children.
