The history of the Iraqi / Iranian war shows that the Iraqis were far stouter defenders of their own territory (i.e. Iraq) than they were of captured territory (i.e. Iran or later, Kuwait). A regime change by force would require marching on Baghdad. The conscripts would be defending their homes in that case.

Well, that's just a bit of a different scenario. Nobody in their right mind honestly believes the US goal is to invade and annex Iraq. Iran was a different story. They wanted to annex the southern and northern part of Iraq, where several Shiite holy cities are located and create a Shiite Arab puppet state.

But everyone knows that the US will rebuild almost any nation that they go to war with and establish some kind of democracy, and create greater economic prosperity (overall) than existed previously.

And the Iraqis know this... They know we could have invaded and overthrew Saddam back in 1991, but we didn't. And they WERE defending their own territory. If one recall, we were almost on the outskirts of Baghdad before our troops were halted, and Iraqis surrendered enmasse to US forces (and even to a couple of reporters).

The only ones who will defend Baghdad are those who perceive that they will lose everything, including their lives, should Saddam fall. But even that can be "worked through", should we permit them to go into exile with their stolen wealth (or at least their lives).
