I don't know where you got your numbers, but mine are different. I use Real Time Trader and have a chart of the DJII. Further, I believe I got my numbers from a year end report, I believe from a State Pension Fund (I forgot which one).
According to RT Trader: The Dow opened Jan 3, 2000 at 11497.12 (not 10940). The Dow closed the final trading day of 2000 with value of 10786.85. -6.1%
If you look at President Clinton's last year in office: The Dow opened Jan 20, 2000 with a value of 11489.36 (according to my quote service, the peak close of the Dow was Jan 14, at 11722.98). The Dow closed Jan 18, 2001 with a value of 10678.28 (I don't have numbers for Jan 20, 2001, but Jan 22-according to my quote service- closed at 10578).
