My own expectation is that it will be one damn thing after another. No peace, no end to it, no final resolution. Too many mutually exclusive situations knocking up against each other without any mutually acceptable solution.

On this agree. I'm just not sure why so many people seem so determined to punch the tar baby. The less long-term involvement we have in that miserable area, the happier I'll be.

In terms of WMD acquisition, I think the possibility of Islamist insurrection in Pakistan is more dangerous than Saddam. If Saddam ever gets the big one, he's going to keep it under his personal control, and use it to protect his ass. I can't see him turning it over to a bunch of loose cannon types that are way beyond his control.
