Re: With AMD being by far the minority player (volume wise) how many segments should they seek for the platform?

5 minutes after Hammer launches, AMD will be the market leader in 64-bit Windows/Linux chips for servers and workstations.

I did wonder if perhaps they were getting ahead of themselves, just a bit.

As far as the volume needed to validate a product for a segment, look at how many serverworks chipsets there are, and how many different boards are produced for each chipset - many of them must be limited to 10's of thousands or even thousands of units for some models.

32-bit chips ran out of steam this year. Intel is 2-3 years behind where they expected to be in their 64-bit Itanium ramp, which should have been moving into volume desktops by now, and it looks like that platform is permanently too late. There is room for a couple of million mid-range to high end 64-bit systems to be sold by AMD next year, if they can get a tier 1 partner to support them.

Intel's subsidies to Dell destroyed HP, IBM, and Compaq's engineered workstation/server businesses, and they'd love to see some real competition in the CPU market. The big question is whether or not any of them will dare to risk the wrath of Intel's extortion program.
