Another thing is that the systems the OEMs are selling are not the top performers. They go the extra step to reduce anything that could result in tech support call, using the most conservative settings, at the cost of poor performance compared to what a DIY tweaker can do.

Take a look at Van Smith's review of the latest AMD CPUs compared to an Intel system which is an off the shelf (Fedex Truck) Dell system. Athlon blows that system away in most of the benchmarks, while the other web sites using more heavily tweaked P4 systems at least match and in many cases surpass the Athlon systems with their DIY P4 systems.

I think OEMs like Dell or HPQ will never agree to any kind of objective testing method for complete systems, exposing their underperforming systems.
