I've seen articles like that. Such articles really don't apply to areas like mine, which are highly desirable suburban postings. There is a huge captive labor market in our area- of spouses of Lawrence Livermore Lab personnel. These (generally) highly educated spouses often are women, and often become teachers. We didn't used to have many other job opportunities in the valley. Now businesses have moved in but many LLL spouses still choose teaching. As a result our math and science teachers are usually outstanding. I believe our city has one of the highest PhD concentrations in the nation, and our visiting scientists program in the schools is fantastic.

We are a lucky community, educationally speaking. We have problems, but unfortunately for me, and fortunately for my children :-) finding good teachers is not one of our problems. My children are much more important than my job prospects, so on balance I'd have to say I am thrilled with what is available here, and I feel very lucky to be here.
