Tom -

Just thought I'd provide a piece of data on HDTV transmission. It
is possible to fit 2 HDTV channels in a single 6 MHz analog channel
slot if you are using 256-QAM modulation. You could fit 1 HDTV channel
and a couple SDTV channels in the same slot with 64-QAM modulation or
many (6? -> 14 with statistical multiplexing?) SDTV channels in the
same slot with 64-QAM and 33% more with 256-QAM. GIC's current boxes
do 64-QAM (DCT-1000) and 256-QAM (DCT-1200). Once the cable networks
go digital, HDTV transmission should not be a technical problem, just
an economic one. No one knows how many people will be willing to pay
for added resolution.
