Unstable Overclocking and Sample must be returned to AMD !!

Not much to worry about with this Athwiper launch. What a sorry attempt at a new product "introduction".

Part Ten: Overclocking

I'd hoped to thoroughly investigate overclocking in this review but due to it arriving relatively late to us and because this particular chip was to be returned to AMD post-review I figured it best not to go doing anything too drastic.

This new CPU from AMD did indeed run cooler thanks to the new design yet it still requires a very good cooling system. The Taisol fan supplied by AMD was rather entry level and as such during testing, the CPU did reach around 60c. While this is not drastically high, it's certainly far hotter than Intel's P4 runs. AMD will have to really produce some stellar chips to win back the overclocking community who have flocked so quickly to the Pentium 4 and it's amazing 'overclockability'.

The sample we received was unstable at any setting higher than 144FSB. This translates to 2.30GHz which is certainly a good overclock, it just seems rather poor in comparison to Intel's friendly CPU's. The CPU was of course locked although it seemed as though the pencil trick was all that was needed to unlock it and release it's full potential.

Part Eleven: Conclusions

The new CPU from AMD has certainly produced some great scores in all our benchmarks and the performance lead held by Intel has once again almost vanished. Yet the future will really hold more answers than this CPU, with rumors of Intel's soon to be released 2.80GHz CPU's and AMD's shift toward the true 166FSB, it seems as though the true fight is only just beginning. If Intel can make the move to 3GHz before the year is out then AMD will clearly have a lot of work to catch up with the CPU giant.

The 2600+ comes highly recommended and of course the release will trigger further price drops across the XP range. AMD have made up a lot of ground and now the ball is firmly back in Intel's court, just how they choose to return it is something only the future will reveal, for now at least, the 2600+ has shown AMD still has what it takes to truly compete.

Pros: -

1. The fastest AMD CPU.
2. Improved design really does show
3. Faster than Intel's 2.53GHz in some benchmarks.

Cons: -

1. Will be expensive
2. Still a little hot running
3. Price drops across Intel's range may affect sales badly
