The reason I bring this up now is because I believe I know the real meaning of what the Middle East population means by it is all our fault, ...we brought it on ourselves.

It has nothing to do with oil, trade, or arrogance. These are excuses. It has everything to do with our recent loss of face when we turned our back and ran from Somalia.

A relatively simple operation that should have stayed simple but our actions in that campaign opened the door for the final insult which changed the complexion of the area.

Lost was the appearance of invincibility we garnered from Desert Storm. The average person in the Middle East respects power and those that wield it. Our loss in Somalia showed our weakness and they not only recognized but also tested and eventually exploited that weakness.

The exploiter was Hussein. He got his ducks lined up. He even had talks with Iran over ending the embargo. He saw his chance (saw the coming fight in Kosovo) and took it. He knew we were stretched too thin and short on supplies for wars on two fronts. All he had to do was survive in office and he would win. He beat President Clinton by doing just that and a little help from Russia.

Soon afterwards our Arab partners in the region were looking for other alliances for security and took a more proactive role in their various spheres of influence. Iran was a busy little beaver forging alliances with any and all comers.

Russia was on easy street. They took full advantage and forged new ties in the region.
