Van Sun says B.C. contributes to OSC-SEC target roster

2002-08-23 07:15 PT - In the News

The Vancouver Sun reports in its Friday edition that associates Jack Purdy and Kavan Garner are unlikely to be returning calls from their offices at 1250 West Hastings any time soon. The Sun's David Baines writes that the pair are among the 60 Canadian and U.S. stock operatives arrested last week in a three-year FBI and RCMP sting operation. The pair, along with Ronaldo Horvat, Harold Joliffe and former lawyer Martin Chambers, were indicted by Florida grand juries for allegedly laundering money provided by undercover agents posing as members of a Colombian drug organization. One indictment, against Mr. Chambers, Mr. Garner and Michael Hepburn of Keywest Swiss Investment in Barbados, allegedly agreed to launder $500,000 (U.S.) in stocks in Europe and the U.S. Mr. Chambers allegedly was the directing mind and charged a 5-per-cent fee for laundering the money. Another indictment was issued against Mr. Purdy, Horvat and Joliffe and involved their Bolivian Hardwoods company and money laundering. A third indictment was issued against Mr. Purdy and Mr. Garner, who said they were principals in Garner Purdy Venture Capital and Diacam Ventures. They allegedly agreed to launder $500,000 (U.S.).
