Trying to make its case, Bush administration paints Saddam as evil story.news.yahoo.com

The URL title on that one is a little more to the point, "us_demonizing_saddam_1" . Skipping ahead to the end, we see that some people understand the game Perle and Co. are playing quite well. I'm sure the people playing the game locally understand it perfectly well too, shove W as far out on a limb as you can get him and then tell him we'll lose face if he tries to inch back.

But demonizing an enemy is not without risks, the greatest one being failure to back up the threats.

"You have to have a plan. You have to follow through. Anything else would be disastrous politically," Goure says.

That explains the drumbeat of negative talk about Saddam, Jillson added.

"You have to keep the public with you and you have to build up to the event," he says. "You can't sort of establish that position and be silent for three months and then strike. It's really hard to back off of something like this."

On the "keeping the public with you" front, this other news is on the wire services today:

Poll: American Support for Toppling Saddam Slips story.news.yahoo.com

Public support slips for ousting Saddam story.news.yahoo.com

The WH news managers better get cracking on that demonization effort. I'm sure the local auxillary will be more than happy to redouble their efforts.
