I think having the thread's regulars decide who to associate with is appropriate. For one thing, if the thread regulars are so shallow that they would truly want to exclude anyone who would dare to disagree with them, why would the thread even be worth posting on?

Here, there was a legitimate issue with a poster who did appear to be simply attacking and provoking to some degree. And yet, the thread regulars who were designated (pretty much everybody) did not kick the person off the thread.

I don't think that's an unreasonable approach.
