Sir, The discussion of a decline in standards must distinguish one area from another.
A large minority of undergraduates now write essays in sentences consisting of principal clauses glued together by commas, without conjunctions, subordinate clauses or semi-colons. This practice and others equally deplorable probably arise from a lack of any sense of literary sentence structure, which is itself significant of the want of the habit of serious reading from childhood, outside a narrow modern school curriculum. Long ago, as an admissions tutor, I ceased to ask candidates at interview their favourite authors — so few had any — and an academic is now pleasantly surprised to find a pupil with basic acquaintance with classical mythology or European history or English literature, sacred or secular.
