Verizon Contract

MONTREAL, Aug 22, 2002 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX) --
NHC Communications Inc. (TSE: NHC) today announced that, following a Request for Proposal process, it has been awarded a multi-year contract for the deployment of its ControlPoint(TM) solutions by Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) at sites to be selected.

Verizon, one of the world's leading communications companies, is NHC's second major American Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier (ILEC) to go through field trials and select NHC Communications as a supplier of Automated Main Distribution Frames.

Verizon plans to utilize NHC's ControlPoint(TM) 5400 systems to fully automate the main distribution frame (MDF) in a number of small unmanned remote central offices. The deployment of NHC's automated MDF will allow Verizon to facilitate the deployment, provisioning, and maintenance of copper- based voice and data lines.

The ControlPoint will remotely manage the physical layer of voice and data cross-connections, such as POTS, T-1, ISDN, and xDSL thus streamlining its central office operations and increasing the efficiency of service to its customers. Verizon expects to place its first order for ControlPoint in the 3rd quarter of 2002. The contract is subject to a number of conditions typical for transactions of this nature.

"We are very pleased that Verizon has chosen to do business with us and to use the ControlPoint(TM) solutions," said NHC President and CEO Sylvain Abitbol. "It confirms that we are headed towards our goal of leadership within this sector of the global telecommunications market and it strengthens our efforts to continue to develop leading-edge products in this area."
