A young bank worker believed to be in serious financial problems after reaching the spending limits on 36 credit cards died after inhaling charcoal fumes in his Tuen Mun home yesterday.

Police found all 36 credit cards, along with a pile of demand notes, stuffed into his trouser pockets. Officers estimated he owed banks about $500,000.

The man, surnamed Tsui, 25, was found dead by firemen who broke down his locked bedroom door after his sister returned to the flat at 6pm and noticed smoke seeping out.

Firemen found Tsui, who worked at a local Chinese bank, lying unconscious on the bed with a pot of burned charcoal near him. Ambulancemen who examined him certified him dead at the scene.

Police said no death note was found in the flat and initial inquiries showed there were no suspicious circumstances.

Tsui was alone in the flat at the time after his parents and his older sister left for a trip to the mainland at 6am.

His sister returned home and became worried when she found her brother's bedroom door was locked.

She became frightened when and called the police when she spotted the smoke and her brother failed to respond when she banged on the door.
