My children play perfectly, and with incredible tone. Tonight they made no mistakes. But they practice at least 45 minutes a day, every day (i'm talking about the little ones- who are 8 and 10, my 13 year old in band often plays for much longer). Frequently they practice more. I would have been embarrassed had some of the other children playing been mine. One boy played a piece far FAR beyond his ability, and it went on for 7 minutes.
I play the piano, and my children play wind instruments, that helps me enjoy their music more, because their music has a different quality from mine. I am going to start teaching them piano this year, we will see how that goes. I am relatively patient. I have played piano since I was 5 years old. I took lessons through college, but I could never play by ear the way my children can. I read music like crazy, but my children are amazing- they can read AND play by ear. I am so proud of them. Sometimes, especially on nights like tonight, I cannot believe they are mine. |
