>> O2 to Launch Java Games And MMS Later This Year

M2 Communications
August 23, 2002

mmO2's Dutch mobile subsidiary, O2 Nederland, has announced plans to launch Java-based games in October, followed shortly by its multimedia messaging service (MMS). In this way, O2 hopes to increase consumer-generated data traffic.

O2 will offer two new handsets for the launch of these new services, with three more by Christmas.

There are currently still compatibility problems between the Ericsson and Nokia MMS platforms, something O2 believes will be resolved before launch date. Limited availability of MMS-enabled handsets, however, remains the biggest threat to a smooth launch and mass take-up of this service.

On the SMS side of the business, O2's SMS traffic is on the rise, the company reports. Its total network has already handled more than 3.4bn SMS messages this year, compared with a 2001 volume of 1.6bn. In addition, O2 is looking to increase revenues through more SMS-based interactive services. <<
