What's interesting, though natural, is that we ascribe intelligence, consciousness, etc. to other species based on our own brand of intelligence, consciousness, etc. Because a rock can't talk to us, we assume it has no intelligence, no consciousness. That might be totally wrong. Rocks may have a great deal of intelligence, but they just don't show it in ways that we understand intelligence to be shown. They could have solved the mystery of the universe, and we wouldn't know it.
