KDDI To Offer Real Time Video Service Via 3G Cellphone

TOKYO (Dow Jones)--KDDI Corp. (9433) said Monday it will offer a real time video service via its third generation mobile phone service from September.

KDDI started providing 3G services in April.

The new 3G service will be available initially via two mobile phone models with built-in cameras to be marketed from Sept. 20.

Users can record video clips with camera-equipped mobile phones and send e-mails with the clips in attached files via the phone. In December last year, KDDI launched a video service but the service only enabled users to download clips.

KDDI aims to catch up with its rival NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437) and Japan Telecom Holdings Co. (9434), which already offer similar video services.

KDDI President Tadashi Onodera said he believes the new service will help his company take a leading position as a 3G mobile service operator.

The company also reaffirmed its target of obtaining 7 million 3G subscribers by the end of March 2003.

Subscribers to KDDI's 3G mobile phone service topped 1 million on June 23, and 2 million on Aug. 23 - less than five months after the launch of the service April 1, outpacing the rise in NTT DoCoMo's 3G subscribers.

The rise was due not only to new customers signing up, but also to customers who current use KDDI's conventional mobile phone services shifting to its 3G service.

Along with the new mobile video service, the second-biggest Japanese carrier said Walt Disney Co. (Japan) will provide mobile phone-specialized movie contents to its subscribers from October.
