OK, that's a powerful argument for mandatory life in prison without parole as a minimum sentence for murder. The deterrent effect you champion is harder to prove, in either direction. My own views evolved away from supporting the DP to supporting life in prison without parole as the sentence of choice, due largely to the fact that the system has enough flaws and misplaced motivations that frying an innocent person has become too likely (and may have happened already, though it hasn't been proven to have happened).
