Was too tired last night to have read the Mandelbaum piece with any degree of discernment, but it occurred to me that the notion of American power being used beneficially to spread democracy is a bit rich. Some cultures are not ready for democracy and may never be. Using American power to spread democracy seems a good justification for more, ahem, self-interested goals.
