"If someone repeatedly says you're a heartless SOB, I think you would call that harassment. It's also protected free speech."

Depends...If you are continually making their life difficult they may be simply calling a spade a spade and holding you accountable for your behaviour. If they are repeatedly hounding you like this because they are a disgruntled x-something, then it is harrassment and you should not have to just "put up with it."

"Suppose I claim there are a bunch of two-bit burglars working on your staff. Free speech or not?"

It depends on what you are basing these claims on. If you have reason to believe my staff are two-bit burglars you had better be ready to back it up with evidence. If my staff are honest and law abiding I will be calling the law to have this stopped. These claims could cause me to lose accounts and that is slanderous. You are liable for my losses.
