Culture is like a blanket which surrounds and protects a society. It's made up of underlying assumptions, beliefs, principles and values the people hold dear.
As the Declaration of Independence states: "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness."
These words serve as the template upon which our culture has taken root. They've served us well. This is the old idea of tolerance; respecting the rights of others. The right to life means that people should be protected from murderers.
By refusing to paint a clear picture of who was to blame for the murder of innocent citizens on September 11, 2001. The NEA's inference in its lesson plans is that murderers should be tolerated.
The NEA's vision is a modern "tolerant" society which enforces moral relativism, a tyranny no better than what our American founders rebelled against. To them, "Tolerance" stands for moral relativism, the assertion that there is no fundamental truth in the world. They embrace this mental model and seek to inculcate our youth with their belief system. Many in academia live under this same vision. They believe that toleration fends off future acts of mass violence and persecution.
Just perhaps, that view is a simplistic naive one.
We shouldn't tolerate the culture of radical Islam and allow them to murder innocent Americans. We should have the courage to call a spade-a-spade. Radical Islam seeks to impose medieval laws on every nation on earth. Their Islamic beliefs are akin to what Europe suffered under in the dark ages. To them, our culture is a sickening virus which needs to be injected with a "Jihad killing agent".
We should be proud of our culture and what we've worked together to build. We shouldn't be shy about patriotism, nor shy about the reason we're defending our nations cultural values.
That's the lesson plan the NEA should have adopted.
