| Yes, I think that is correct. However, we do not have "official English", or an equivalent to the Academie Francaise, and have done pretty well, the reason being that literature becomes the standard, just as Tuscan became the standard dialect for Italian, Castilian became the standard dialect for Spanish, and London English became the standard dialect for English, because of the concentration of revered authors who wrote in those dialects. In addition, dictionaries, grammars,and encyclopedia codify "good usage" to a great extent, and resist mere slang...... |
