"When they blow up things or burn things like crosses or flags or cars or shout profanities or strip naked, they are demonstrating the intensity of their feelings, not necessarily the object."

So people are complicated beings. Each one can come up with a million excuses, most of which are valid. Responsible people deal directly with the object of their concern, not indirectly with some innocent object. When they don't act responsibly they are committing a crime and the excuses don't erase that.

"...only that the motive for the crime is not typical for that crime

So what?

"... and doesn't necessarily have anything to do with cats."

Well that depends on whether you like the popular butter ball variety or the lean.

"All we can get them on is destruction of property."
We have had a couple of cases of animal cruelty (to cats) in our state over the past year that received major news coverage and resulted in long prison sentences.

"The affection we may have for the cat or the flag isn't a factor." I disagree but that was not my point anyway.

My point was simply trying to draw a line. What does the flag represent and what does burning it represent. The flag is a symbol of our Constitutionally founded Country. If you burn it as a demonstration you are doing what? You are attacking and destroying the symbol of America. I actually feel that it is a little over blown. It some times makes me uncomfortable to think we are practically worshipping the thing when we stand with our hands over our hearts before it.

I fully realize that in most cases the context of the situation reveals a different primary target. Yet the results are that many of us feel that the foundations of America are being assaulted in the process.

"They cut themselves or even kill themselves. Right up there with the flag burners are those who self immolate."

Suicide is murder...IMO. The more excuses you make for flag burners the more I am convinced we should not make excuses for them.
