Dataquest sees mobile phone market turning up Semiconductor Business News (08/27/02 01:19 p.m. EST) SAN JOSE, Calif. -- In the seciond quarter of 2002 worldwide mobile phone sales increased by 0.8% over the same quarter in the previous year, to total of 98.7 million units, according to the Dataquest subsidiary of Gartner, Inc. Gartner Dataquest analysts said there are signs that the mobile phone industry has reached a point of stability and is positioned for stronger growth in the second half of 2002 and particularly in the fourth quarter. "Mobile terminal manufacturers are preparing for a comprehensive transition of their product portfolios during the back half of 2002 to embrace color displays and other mobile data-enabling technologies," said Bryan Prohm, a senior analyst with Gartner Dataquest, in a statement. Prohm said he expected mobile phone sales to reach 420 million units in 2002. Nokia, with 35.6% of the market, continued to dominate worldwide mobile phone sales during the second quarter of 2002. Motorola lies in second place with 15.7% while Samsung has come into third place after a major decline by Ericsson. In the second quarter of 2001 Ericsson was in third place with 7.2 million units sold but in the second quarter of 2002 the enlarged Sony-Ericsson company could only sell 5.3 million units and dropped to fifth place behind Samsung and Siemens, according to Gartner Dataquest rankings. But looking forward the Dataquest analysts are optimistic. “The frenzy of marketing activity around new services such as picture and photo messaging by mobile network operators in Western Europe is likely to fuel replacement demand for color mobile phones in the second half of 2002," said Ben Wood, senior analyst for Gartner Dataquest in Europe.
