It's not a question of MIPS. We probably have more than enough. The real problem is software, especially the fact that computers will always have a tough time with understanding context. There needs to be a gigantic leap in artificial intelligence before we have "Conversational Voice Recognition." And even after that, I'm not sure I'd want a HAL 9000 around me.

If you are looking for the next killer app, it's NOT going to be voice-recognition.

As for public relations, you have a point in that Barrett's comments can become self-fulfilling prophecies. I would call that a flaw, but not a fatal flaw, and certainly nothing that can affect the economy in any other way except superficially.
