The situation was so tense that my husband was going to take the babies and me away to a hopefully safer place ....

We were living in Baton Rouge then. I was ten, but not too young to understand that Baton Rouge's Exxon (Esso then) refinery was a meaningful target (biggest refinery in the world then), and was within range.

All the children were given dog tags with our names and other personal information so that -- they said -- if we got separated from our families they could find us -- but we knew could also be used to identify our bodies.

We practiced taking shelter under our desks.

We prayed a lot (Catholic school).

There were air raid drills. I can't hear an air raid siren without getting goose bumps.

That and the Berlin Wall (1961) really affected me. I grew up leaning left but have always hated totalitarianism and statism. Does anyone love totalitarianism? Do totalitarians even understand that they are totalitarian? It seems like mass insanity to me.

Anyway, here I am living near ground zero again. Eeeek.
