unless you think that the Marxist Hegelian dialectic turns all of history into a conspiracy theory.

No, Pipes apparently is talking about the worldview of people like Lenin and Stalin.

From my perspective, the belief that capitalism is vicious and destructive is a fantasy. I just ran across Lindsey's essay that Michael posted:

cato.org

It reminds me, quite a bit, of Karl Polanyi's The Great Transformation. The truth is that the transition from a pre-industrial economy to an industrial economy is a great shock, and some people are displaced, never to find their place again. As they flail away, trying to make sense of it all, they are offered a paranoid fantasy worldview that makes perfect sense. It's not their fault. They are being victimized.

What Polanyi said that may seem contrary to my own beliefs -- but I agree with him -- is that while the free market and industrialized society is best, we should try to help people who have been displaced and cannot find their way. I think it is best that this is done by the private sector, but it doesn't bother me too much when government does it, as long as it does not become a way of life.

The above is somewhat disjointed. I got several phone calls while writing it. I hope it made sense.
