Here we disagree, I think most great wealth is inherited (of course not all). When you scratch the self-made stories, for example Michael Dell, you hear how he started in a dorm room, but you don't hear how all his early loans were co-signed by his grandfather of Dell romance novel fame. Several people had similar dreams, Michael Dell had both the dreams and the connections to wait for the dream to come true.

Looking down is mostly for people like Richard Mellon Scaife who inherits millions and uses it to become a world class asshole. It's those 90% of third generation privelidged that give the rest their bad name.
