Aug 29, 2002 (Far Eastern Economic Review - ABIX via COMTEX) -- The US
President George W Bush takes national security more seriously than his
predecessor, Bill Clinton. This new approach to defence matters has serious
repercussions for business. The Bush administration makes it difficult for
Chinese factories to buy the American technology. One of the victims of the new
policy is the chip maker Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation.
The company spent $US1.5 billion on construction of a chip making plant in
Shanghai only to learn that an export licence for two electron-beam systems that
it had ordered from Applied Materials in California was cancelled. The licence
was granted by the Clinton administration.
