inheritance taxes destroy a parent's incentive to provide for their children after the parent's death

I really don't think most parents just give up and say "To heck with the kids, if I can't give them a lifetime of riches they might as well get nothing". For many reasons, including what wealth they can pass on the kids of sucessfull people will still have an advantage. It's really a matter of proportionality. At some point rich lazy slackers can easily outcompete the energetic and talented who have to start at the beginning. That type of wealth disparity is what led to the disruption of the republic of Rome and it's downfall as a corrupt dictatorship. I would hope America could delay or avoid that fate.
