Hershel - re: [Note, DELL is not strong in notebooks] I'm not sure how you come to this conclusion, since last time I checked, about 30% of DELL revenue came from notebooks. But I will add some personal experience with a recent Dell purchase.
I was out of the country most of the summer, and when I got back, decided to treat myself to a new notebook as I spend a lot of my time in the yard by the pool scanning sites like this... I was looking for a notebook with a 1600x1200 display, and was initially leaning toward the big Sony. Dell did not seem to have anything to match it.
Then I looked on the workstation page. Dell has a "Portable workstation", the precision M50, which is bar none the finest and most powerful portable on the market. But it is not sold as a notebook, you won't find it by searching for notebooks on the Dell site. It has all of the features of a full-up workstation - a 2gig processor, a gig of RAM, fast 60GB desktop hard drive, big display (and supports dual display), and interestingly, 2 different wireless standards built in - 80211 of course, and also a WAN link which gives me 100 kbits almost anywhere through a setup with verizon. This machine is designed for professional developers but also runs almost any consumer stuff just fine. It is a leadership product, and out of the Dell "mold" in that it is a market-defining product, not a fast follower, and clearly needed a lot of specialized engineering since there is nothing on the market remotely like it.
At over $5000, it's not for everyone, but for those who want the beat this is clearly the choice. |
