Yes, that they want to escape their past misdeeds. Why is a legal name change any different from operating under a dozen aliases? I think it is much more plausible that this man, having been well-educated as a jailhouse lawyer, is now intending to manipulate the law once again to his own advantage. Right now, after all the jail time, he may be thinking mostly of meeting chicks ... but who know what he may think of after that? I shudder to consider it.
