Of all the people I know of, the one who probably most exemplified care for " the poor, and the ignorant, the desperate, and frequently, the not so very likable" was Mother Teresa. I find very few secular people who have anything like the commitment to the poor that the Sisters of Mercy have. I know there are some who criticize the way she helped some people, but few if any of those critics have been willing to go out in the streets themselves and provide direct care to those in need.

The poor don't need ivory tower theoriticians. They need somebody to touch them, feed them, bathe their wounds, give them medicines. This she did, in spades.
