Scott,

<< Eric, Are you aware that GSM is, at best, 2G. >>

Yes sir.

GSM phase 1 & GSM phase 2 & GSM phase 2+ are all 2G, just as IS-2000 (aka 1xrTT Release 0) is 2G.

GSM EDGE, however is an ITU IMT-2000 3G standard.

<< ALL 3G depends on the CDMA "owned" by QCOM >>

No. That is not an accurate statement, and you sir are blowing smoke.

The ITU has determined that their are 5 RANs that constitute 3G. Two of them are pure CDMA. One is a CDMA/TDMA hybrid. Two including EDGE (EGPRS) are NOT CDMA. 1xEV-DO is a little curious since even though it travels under the MC umbrella, it is a CDM/TDM hybrid.

<< 3G is growing at a brisk pace >>

That is Qualcomm, CDG Hype.

85% of those subs are 2.5G (which is 2G) according to the carriers that commercialized the service and so far as I am concerned as a Qualcomm investor THEY are the people that determine what is 2G & what is 3G.

<< wonder if you would be willing to share the reasons why QCOM might be considered a chimp? >>

They were the company that wanted to be a gorilla - the gorilla of (next generation) wireless.

The technology that they have (open) proprietary architecture was NOT selected and (most likely) will not be selected.

They are the chimp of wireless ... the gorilla of cdmaone/cdma2000.

Best,

- Eric -
