I wasn't talking about what I want, I was talking about what the other states in the region want. The assumption that they don't want the US to move against Iraq because they are afraid a Democracy will emerge is pleasant, but not, IMO, very realistic.

I don't think we should mess with the status quo unless we have a clear idea of what we want to put in its place. If we act according to our principles, that would mean trying to install a democratic government. That would mean an extended commitment and the possibility of bogging down in a very ugly situation. What if we have an election and the bad guys win?

The easy way out would be to stick in a nice, pliable, replacement dictator with good connections in the military who will talk about democracy someday. Then we hope that the dictator will stay nice and pliable.

What do you suppose we would do?

Personally, I don't like any of the options. If we do invade, I'd like to see a clear deal struck that would give the UN or a European coalition responsibility for reconstruction. We could pay for it if necessary, but I think we should get our people out of there FAST.
