only direct means for solar is automobiles, stoves, refrigerators, and stereo sets that run on solar
while we have accomplished the calculator so far, that is about as far as we might get for a while
as for cost, solar panels are radically coming down

they have improved solar panel substrates tremendously
and increased speed of production lines tremendously
they will become a household word by 2010

because of economies of scale, where it is produced, it is produced in much larger quantities than what is needed at that location
our entire developed economies are all about production, storate, distribution, consumption

as in home power plants, office building power plants
we could get there
but even along that path, we will have the need for producing, storing, distributing some key fuels
like methane, methanol, or hydrogen

and because of lack of leadership and foresight, this country and most of Europe will be chugging uphill for the next many many years
