Nokia Says No Change To 3G Phone Launch Plans
Friday August 30, 9:10 am ET

STOCKHOLM -(Dow Jones)- Nokia Corp. still plans to introduce its first third-generation mobile phone Sept. 26, a spokesman said Friday after Finnish operator Sonera Corp. (SNRA) said it would delay the commercial launch of its 3G network to next year.

"Nothing that we have said about our 3G plans has changed," Nokia spokesman Tapio Hedman said.

He said Nokia plans to provide 3G phones for various operator-controlled trials of the new technology this year, with commercial deliveries in greater numbers by 2003, as interoperability issues are resolved and more operators launch services.

Sonera said Friday that it will begin a limited commercial pilot on its UMTS 3G network in Finland early next year. It had planned to begin offering UMTS services on Sept. 26, but said it will now offer new multimedia services through its current mobile network this year.
