I think they were looking at using HighTemp superconductor rings to store energy for peaking demands- large loops buried underground. There are energy losses, keeping the liquid nitrogen temp required for losses circulation of electrons. The one I remember being considered was intended for research rather than a demo of practical on demand energy storage.

If you use solar to create electricity, then by all means use it if needed. But what of night time? Burn gas? Use a fuel cell to reconvert the hydro produced by excess available electricity in the daytime?

I suppose Nuke/Fusion might make this all moot.
