Lincoln did assume massive executive authority - arguably much in violation of Constitutional prohibitions - and historians trace the beginnings of the powerful modern 'Imperial Presidency' to Lincoln's administration.

Much has also been made of the fact that such Executive grabs of power from the other two major branches of Government typically occur during periods of national crisis... such as the period we find ourselves in now.

President 43 has similarly asserted claims of Executive power in excess of historical precedence... and is also furthering our march down the road to an 'Imperial Presidency'.
