would mean a return to power politics, as in the period leading to WW I. The world would likely see an escalation of regional conflicts. What would prevent China from invading Taiwan one day? What Russia from occupying former USSR members?

What prevents them now? the UN? Please. The US alliance protects Taiwan (Tibet is not so lucky), while Russian doesn't even have the strength to take back Chechnya, let alone Byelorus. We have never left power politics, only the umbrella provided by the Cold War balance of terror is gone.
