It's hard, if not impossible, for me even to guess, Derek. But it is clear that something quite significant is going on. As you might guess, I worry that the "moral clarity" bit in the Bush administration will screw it up. The contrary seems to be true, John. Khatami was a "slow and steady and don't rock the boat" kinda guy until the "axis of evil" speech. Now he's proposing such a radical move as proposing (publicly!!) to limit the power of the Council. You are right something momentous is happening in Iran. But I disagree that openly supporting the proponents of democratic change is a mistake. Bush's plain talk has on the contrary possibly QUICKENED the reform movement. It certainly seems to have upped the ante. We shouldn't shirk from loudly declaring our support for representative government. Derek
