It's hard, if not impossible, for me even to guess, Derek. But it is clear that something quite significant is going on. As you might guess, I worry that the "moral clarity" bit in the Bush administration will screw it up.

The contrary seems to be true, John. Khatami was a "slow and steady and don't rock the boat" kinda guy until the "axis of evil" speech. Now he's proposing such a radical move as proposing (publicly!!) to limit the power of the Council. You are right something momentous is happening in Iran. But I disagree that openly supporting the proponents of democratic change is a mistake. Bush's plain talk has on the contrary possibly QUICKENED the reform movement. It certainly seems to have upped the ante. We shouldn't shirk from loudly declaring our support for representative government.
