Time to explain what Beast is.

Beast was a future generation MIPS cpu. Probably what has been called H2 (which was suppossed to follow H1).

Word is low-end H1 performance would have been eclipsed by high-end R12k performance, so H1 is now no more. Instead there is now some more nebuolous H2-- that will directly succeed R12k. Apparently there is no loss of headcount, just a rearrangment.

I have some doubts about the R12k performance rivaling H1's expected performance. Particularly bandwidthwise (which is very important to whatever cray machine is a follow-on to the current cray vector offerings). The MIPS roadmap had H1 with a bandwidth of 5GB/s, the R12k uses the same bus as the r10k which is 64-bits at 100MHz, or 800MB/s peak. Unless the spec for r12k has changed, there is certainly a major descrepency here.

My take is that MIPS probably couldn't deliver H1 in the promised timeframe and so they just bagged it in order to concentrate on H2-- (the rumours are H2 is (among other things) two cpus on one die). I think this bodes poorly for SGI as delivery is now probably well beyond initial Merced shipments (though HP/Intel are so closemouthed about Merced one can never tell if it is really on track).

For however long it lasts, the former MIPS roadmap is at:
