It's probably a lot like religion. It has no rational basis but probably amounts to those that don't distinguish between an on-line persona(s) and the "ACTUAL" them. I wouldn't know any of the aliases here if they worked in the next office. But that's because I know there is a difference between my on-line existence and my personal 3D existence. They are not the same. To me. To some they are and it doesn't seem particularly correlated to the use of a proper alias such as "cosmicforce" or a less anonymous alias like "XXXX Y." where "XXXX" is a proper name and "Y." is an initial.
