Lionel Hampton passed away at the young age of 94. Those jazz guys all die young. <g>

History will probably remember him as one of the first two black men to play in a band fronted by a famous white musician. That was important and credit has to go to Benny Goodman, Teddy Wilson and Gene Krupa, too. It was not a real shocker. White musicians often joined black bands, but the other way around was taboo until this all star quartet formed.

Once you jam with Charlie "Bird" Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, it's kind of hard to say your instrument doesn't belong. I'd rather remember him as a pioneer of vibes and his example was probably inspiration for other great stick hitters like Bobby Humphries, Milt Jackson and Gary Burton. Lots of folks didn't think vibes had a place in Jazz. Lionel proved them wrong by playing with every great jazz musician there was.
